Tierno Barry and the offside rule: How was the goal allowed to stand after Mark Guhi’s foul?

Barry was waiting over Guhi’s shoulder, anticipating when Rohl would make his move as he played the ball.

It was not a good pass directly to the feet of the German midfielder Manchester City Protector.

Barry didn’t put his opponent under pressure when he started going for Guhi. Inexplicably, Guhi’s cross from behind was scored by Barry.

Barry was offside and the assistant initially raised the flag to deny the goal, but was quickly overpowered by Oliver.

The law asks a few key questions: Did Barry do anything to rush Guhi or influence the poor pass?

Barry moved to the ball, but did that really affect Guhi?

And did Guhi fully expect a controlled result by playing the ball?

“Barry is somewhere offside when the ball is played, but it’s up to Guhi,” said the former Manchester City And Everton Defender Andy Hinchcliffe spoke on Sky Sports.

“He controls the action, so suddenly the striker goes offside. That’s why the goal was stopped. That’s Guin’s worst.”

Without these objective referees, you would have to penalize every player just for being in an offside position – even if they are not close to the opponent.

Guhi’s foul is one of the clearest examples of pure defensive noise, and should clearly rule out any offside.

But we have seen controversial ones like Bruno Fernandes’ goal in the Manchester derby three years ago.

Marcus Rashford was offside and ran after the ball but Fernandez got in behind and scored without touching it.

Last year in April LiverpoolLuis Diaz was caught offside behind James Tarkowski as the centre-back tried to intercept a loose ball. Diego Jota scored the winning goal for Arne Stoll’s side.

Some take issue with this rule because, like those two cases, it can inadvertently hurt defenders who know an opponent is nearby but don’t know they’re out of play.

In Tarkowski’s case, would he have acted differently if Diaz hadn’t been there?

It’s not something you can easily fix. You have to completely double it from offside, and many more goals will be disallowed.
