Sean Cairncross has taken a more aggressive approach to China’s AI labs.
Cairncross has a key role in efforts to regulate China’s AI, and has the power in the White House to craft policies to address potential national security risks from AI. He helped induct President Donald Trump June 2 Executive Order which put a system in place to evaluate the most powerful AI models.
A former political science lawyer who most recently served on the Republican National Committee, Cairncross has no technical or AI background.
But current and former employees credit him for trying to tackle the problem national security issues created by AI, and allows its employees to work without managing any problems in the way that a professional programmer would.
In particular, Cairncross and his chief of staff, Lara Smith, have been focusing on preventing Chinese labs from training their samples from the back of advanced US samples, which is called distillation.
In response to a request for comment, White House spokeswoman Elizabeth Huston said the administration’s discussions on Chinese AI were merely an attempt to bolster US AI.
“The United States is leading the world in AI innovation, and President Trump will continue to do so. The Trump administration is doubling down on innovation to widen the gap between America and the rest of the world,” says Huston.
