Businessman and philanthropist Sir Ian Wood has died at the age of 84

First Minister John Sweeney paid tribute to Sir Ian, describing him as “one of Scotland’s most influential business leaders and philanthropists, a man whose vision, commitment and generosity have left a lasting impression on the country and beyond”.

Under his leadership of the Wood Group, he transformed a modest family business into a global energy services company, playing a major role in the growth of the North Sea oil and gas industry and helping make Scotland a world-renowned center of energy expertise.

He thanked Sir Ian for his “commitment” to his hometown of Aberdeen, adding that the businessman had encouraged “initiatives that have strengthened the north east of Scotland and supported the region’s economic evolution in a relentless pursuit of economic development, innovation and opportunity”.

Sweeney praised his transition to a low-carbon future and his philanthropic work.

“Sir Ian Wood’s legacy is one of enterprise, leadership and generosity. He helped shape a modern Scotland, strengthening its economy, boosting the energy industry and demonstrating the profound change that purposeful philanthropy can bring,” he said.

Scottish Conservative MP for Aberdeen South Douglas Lumsden said:

“Scotland has lost a true guiding light of the business community. Sir Ian was a champion of all things North East, both as a supporter of its economy, but also a philanthropist who did much good at home and abroad.

“He and his staff around the world have built an international reputation for excellence.

“Wood’s name means a helping hand to communities wherever he goes.”
