“I think this is a real opportunity to solve a public health problem,” says Saphire. “A tool to prevent or treat disease is cheaper than controlling an epidemic or controlling a fatal case of encephalitis in a child.” Some types of disease predict that measles may be common in the US in the next 25 years, even at current vaccine prices.
Monoclonal antibodies can also be expensive for patients and insurers. In early 2022, the US government destroyed it $855 million for 1.7 million doses of Evusheld, a monoclonal antibody treatment approved for Covid. The medicine was free for patients, but some people were hit with hundreds of dollars out-of-pocket expenses related to drug administration.
The monoclonal antibody combination that became Evusheld was developed in just 25 days by scientists at Vanderbilt University, who have also discovered powerful measles antibodies. The university partnered with small biotech company Saravir Biopharma to continue development.
James Crowe, an immunologist and director of the Vanderbilt Center for Antibody Therapeutics who led the Covid project, says his approach is to use two monoclonal antibodies to greatly reduce the chance that the measles virus will mutate. His group has been developing human antibodies against viruses that could cause future pandemics and was at the center of measles work last year as cases in the U.S. soared.
“The antibodies that we have isolated are very strong, they are very effective against the virus. We are confident that they can be developed as a single shot,” says Crowe.
Once monoclonal antibodies are ready for human testing, regulators will need to know how to evaluate them in clinical trials. New drugs are often tested in adults to make sure they are safe for children. But complications caused by measles can lead to hospitalization of children, especially those who have not been vaccinated.
Antivirals can also be used as a treatment for measles, although they take longer and must be given as soon as a person is infected or becomes ill. Georgia State University researchers discovered an oral antiviral drug and tested it on rats, ferrets, and dogs with viruses related to the orthoparamyxovirus family because these animals don’t get measles. The drug lowered the viral load and all treated animals survived. But we have to be known among people.
A challenge in the development of antivirals is that drugs that are toxic enough to kill viruses often have unpleasant side effects in humans.
However, the big question is whether people will use the drugs that are being developed or allow their children to take them. Although anti-vaccination sentiment is driving the trend, Invivyd’s Mina hopes that people who have not vaccinated their children or the vaccine will be open to anti-monoclonal because “this is a molecule that our bodies make naturally.”

And anti-scientific sentiment has become more widespread with Robert F. This does not mean that testing for antibodies and other measles treatments is not worthwhile, however, especially because of the potential to help people who cannot receive the vaccine. Crowe says it’s important to keep measles treatment funded as vaccine prices continue to decline.
He said: “I think there will be many thousands of people. “People will die, and it is important to finish this work.”
