How many midfielders do Rangers need after a busy summer of recruitment?

Three of Rangers’ seven summer signings – and none of their 11 departures – have been central midfielders.

Yet they already had six books—nine if you include the three who were out on loan.

Considering they are attacking midfielders, you can discount Thelo Asgard, who has just arrived at the World Cup with Norway, and Nedim Bajrami, who has failed to become a regular starter in his two years at Ibrox, as competition for the more defensive-minded Devlin.

Likewise Jose Cifuentes, Lyall Cameron and 20-year-old Paul Ncio, considering they have returned from Toronto, Aberdeen and Raith Rovers respectively, are ready to step up without being advised.

Ivory Coast international Mohamed Diomonde, whose form dipped in his second full season at Ibrox, is the box-to-box man.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Raskin has been more effective going forward for Rangers despite preferring to only play in front of defence.

However, that latter role earned the Belgium international rave reviews at the World Cup, leading Rangers to look to cash in this summer on a player who has expressed his desire to move to a top-five league.

Given Ruskin’s expected departure, it would come as no surprise that McInnes would look to snap up Devlin, as the Australian was a key player in their title challenge with Hearts – especially as he was available on a free.

However, Rangers have added two more defensive midfielders – Dan Neil, who is out of contract with Sunderland, and Vanja Dragojevic, bought from Partizan, where he captained at just 20 years of age.

That’s before considering two more defensive midfielders already on Rangers’ books.

Scotland cap Conor Barron is certainly relishing the arrival of his former Aberdeen manager as he looks to start more regularly, while Tochi Chukwanyi is still a sleeper following his January arrival from Storm Graz.

Meanwhile, Rangers are set to be linked with current Storm Graz defensive midfielder Ryan Fosso.

At least Jens Hjerto-Dahl, for whom Rangers are said to have been rejected by Tromsø, is more attacking.
