Maika Sivo’s suspect hand in Leeds Rhinos’ 42-12 win over Bradford Bulls took them two points clear at the top of Super League and the Fijian winger hoped to break the record for most tries in a season.
Rhinos coach Brad Arthur later said the 32-year-old’s arm would need dressings and the former Parramatta Eels star was likely to be out for around six weeks.
Civo is currently on 29 tries for a Super League campaign with the record number of touchdowns in a single season being 40 collected by Castleford’s Denny Solomona in 2016.
Sivo, who is expected to return before the end of the regular season, suffered the injury while making a tackle during Leeds’ seven-try win at Headingley on Sunday.
Leeds’ Micah Sivo has scored 29 Super League tries this season and is poaching Danny Solomon’s record 40.
James McDonnell scored twice in his 100th Super League for the Rhinos, while Jarrod O’Connor, Tom Holroyd, Brodie Croft, Cooper Jenkins and Calum Watkins scored one each as Leeds bounced back from last week’s 36-34 defeat at Castleford.
Bradford, who suffered a sixth defeat in seven top-flight matches, went ahead when Guy Armitage scored brilliantly from a Chris Atkin kick but Leeds hit back through McDonnell, despite the huge shock of beating Civo.
Jack Connor had an attempt ruled out for a double move but he set up a second for McDonnell and O’Connor extended Leeds’ advantage to 18-6 at half-time.
Bradford pulled one back after the break when Ethan Ryan claimed a high ball and exchanged passes with Atkin to cross but Leeds soon recovered themselves, when Holroyd converted after a monster kick from Connor to make it 40-20.
Connor converted all seven tries for Leeds, who now have 32 points after 20 games, two more than Wakefield Trinity and Wigan Warriors.
Bradford are 12th with 12 points, two clear of Hull FC and six better than rock-bottom Huddersfield giants.
