Evans, on the other hand, is fast and qualified for the distance, and any pre-Games ignorance evaporated when she entered this frenzy on Sunday.
The Cambridge-born athlete could have represented England or Wales through her parents, but after returning from her studies in the United States to train at the University of Stirling, she opted for Scotland.
And the run that has greeted her in the past — and carried her — is plenty of reward for that decision.
Evans’ stunning nails – emblazoned with Saltires, popular lager brand Nessie and the words ‘Irn Bru’ – cut through the water, the crowd cheering and cheering as she hit the wall with a loud thud.
Afterward, she explained why she didn’t feel more stressed during the race, but thanked her Scotland fans for helping her through the hustle and bustle.
“It’s not the biggest crowd I’ve ever raced in front of, but it’s the loudest and the most passionate,” added Evans, who was sixth in the event at the Paris Olympics.
“I had a choice of England, Wales or Scotland but Scotland just felt right, it felt like home, they made me the athlete I am today and I dreamed of winning gold and making the crowd scream and this was 100 times bigger.”
Amazingly for her rivals, Evans’ main event is yet to come. The 200m preliminaries on Wednesday were considered her more likely medal hopes.
So can she find herself enjoying the atmosphere of Tolcross?
“I don’t think you can top that feeling tonight, but we’ll see how it goes,” she said.
