Lando Norris ended his eight-month wait for a Formula One victory with a blistering pace and a good chance to win Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
Defending champion McLaren finished ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and young contender Kimi Antonelli at the Hungaroring circuit in Budapest on Sunday.
Norris was on pole but lost the lead to McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri as he raced into the second corner, before retaking the lead after Piastri’s late collision with Carlos Sainz Jr during the pit stop.
This allowed Norris to exit the pits ahead of his teammate and take the win.
“The car was incredible today. Well done guys, amazing. We were flying,” Norris said. “I’m happy to finally do all this for you.
Piastri stopped with a broken gearbox, paving the way for Verstappen to take second, with Antonelli third.
Antonelli extended his lead, while team-mate Lewis Hamilton finished fifth after a speeding penalty in the pits and George Russell seventh after a late start.
Norris has not won a full Grand Prix race since Sao Paulo in November, although he did win a race in Miami in May.
Hungary was the last tournament of the pre-season break. The next race is the Dutch Grand Prix on August 23.
