Hungarian Grand Prix results: Lando Norris third from Max Verstappen with Kimi Antonelli

Lando Norris took his and McLaren’s first win of the year in a thrilling Hungarian Grand Prix.

As Norris cruised to a comfortable victory, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli had a tense battle for the remaining podium positions in the closing laps.

Verstappen barely managed to hold on while Antonelli finished third, 50 points ahead of his championship leader Lewis Hamilton and 59 ahead of his Mercedes team-mate George Russell, who finished seventh after a poor start.

Ferrari’s Hamilton finished the grand prix on Antonelli’s tail in fourth but was penalized five seconds for speeding in the pit lane and dropped to fifth behind his team-mate Charles Leclerc.

Norris’ teammate Oscar Piastri led for most of the first half of the race but retired in second place with gearbox failure.

Key stories in the race were:

  • Norris’ victory was aided by a controversial strategy that did not please his teammate Piastre

  • A surprise second for Verstappen after a tactical gamble for Red Bull

  • A disappointing race for Ferrari hurt Hamilton’s chances with another penalty due to their pace

  • A positive weekend for Aston Martin with their new car despite not scoring points
