What is the story?
Left-back Alvaro Carreras, 23, faces an uncertain future at Real Madrid just a year after joining from Portuguese side Benfica for €50m, amid growing interest from Chelsea.
Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo say Real are considering letting go of the Spaniard as part of their plan to make way for new signings, especially after the squad reaches 25 players, with talks continuing to include Ivorian Yann Diamandi from Leipzig in Germany and not giving up on the idea of signing Rodri.
From mainstream to alternative
Carreras’ arrival under former coach Xabi Alonso was smooth sailing as he had a starting role on Alonso’s side’s bench until the start of last January, but the arrival of Alvaro Arbeloa as his successor made things more difficult as he finished the season on the bench in favor of Frans García.
The current season doesn’t look any brighter for the player, who is under contract until June 2031, especially after the arrival of World Cup winner Marc Cucurella, which will almost certainly leave him on the bench forever.
A win-win deal for all parties
In this context, Chelsea, led by their coach Xabi Alonso, have repeatedly shown an interest in bringing Carreras, a move that could be beneficial for all parties. On the one hand, the English club will fill the void left by Cucurella after moving to Madrid, and on the other hand, the Spanish player will get the playing time he misses in the Spanish capital.
The deal could also help reduce the total cost of €55 million, on top of the €5 million in add-ons that Real Madrid paid to bring in Cucurella from Chelsea.
There will be crucial talks between the two clubs in the coming weeks to decide the fate of the deal, as manager Jose Mourinho looks to rebuild the Royal squad and bolster it with new faces to suit his artistic ambitions.
