ODI Cup: Middlesex Thrush thrash helpless Glamorgan

The team changes suggest the home side will be favourites, but not the scale of the next one-sided clash.

Middlesex recalled Rowland-Jones for Jack Nelson, while Glamorgan debuted two seamers – 18-year-old academy product Tom Edwards and Aussie Conor O’Riordan, who is on an extended second team trial.

Both teams have five players in their hundreds, but Glamorgan have also chosen to rest the overworked Tim van der Googen as well as veterans Colin Ingram and Chris Cook, with Zain Ul Hasan on paternity leave, teenage prodigy Tom Norton missing at least most of the competition with a back problem, Jamie McIlroy and Biller not suffering.

Sharma quickly eased into his stride as Callum Nicholls was declared lbw, but Glamorgan reached 44 before losing wickets in six consecutive overs when Byrom got the ball for six fours.

Sharma Henry Harley (10) caught by keeper Joe Cracknell, Jack Hope-Bell caught at mid off and Will Smale lbw.

Meanwhile Rowland-Jones induced Byrom (29) and Dan Douthwaite to slip, Sam Robson took two smart grabs, and Alex Horton took a catch behind.

Rowland-Jones bowled his allotted 10 overs straight away, while Sharma was replaced after seven by Cornwell, who bowled the last three and Cracknell finished with four catches.

The solid bounce did not excuse the extent of Glamorgan’s struggles against an accurate seam attack.

With a nervous 20 balls off O’Riordan’s first over, Josh de Keers sent Middlesex off to a flyer.

Captain Andy Garvin removed himself after just two overs to bowl Edwards, but 50 came in just six overs as de Keers and Nathan Fernandes were able to attack with freedom.

Fernandes (14) drove Edwards to mid-on to give the youngster his first senior wicket, and returned the second with a quick catch to Sam Robson.

But De Keers (45 not out from 30 balls) scored the winning run off the first ball of the 10th over.

Middlesex next travel to Worcester on Friday 31st July.

Glamorgan take on former England captain Ben Stokes in Durham on Wednesday, with further away fixtures against Derbyshire and Hampshire as they look to rebuild confidence.
