“I’ve met too many people who are retired and they’re just sitting around waiting for their retirement age to run out,” he says.

“You don’t know how much time you’ve got, so you have to try and make sure you’re not dependent on other people.”

His message is that security is important to everyone, “it’s not enough for us to accept.”

If everyone took control of their own safety tomorrow, the lines in the NHS could be halved – and that starts with safety.

“Movement is medicine. Add in a little laughter and it’s even better medicine.”

According to the NHS, adults aged 65 and over should aim to exercise daily and complete “at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week”.

However, a survey by Sport England found that 42 per cent of people aged 55 and over were inactive, compared with 29 per cent of adults.

A special afternoon tour was organized by Baillie Gratham, who runs fitness and wellness classes in the care sector.

The 23-year-old, who was raised by his grandparents, said he started the business six years ago “because of our older generation’s need to move.”

“I realized the impact of exercise on our older generation and how important it is.”
