The World Cup sparks a major crisis…violence and mass arrests
The fallout from the 2026 World Cup was not limited to the green rectangle, as official UK figures revealed an unprecedented rise in domestic violence and crime linked to the tournament, amid warnings that alcohol consumption played a role in exacerbating the crisis.
Incidents of domestic violence in the United Kingdom are at their highest ever level in the run-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with 384 incidents reported, according to figures released by the British Football Police Department.
England fans were counting on coach Thomas Tuchel and captain Harry Kane’s side to win a second World Cup title since 1966 before Argentina crushed their dreams in the semi-finals, leaving the Three Lions content with the bronze medal after beating France 6-4.
Escalation of the crisis: the World Cup… and alcohol consumption
According to the network Skye Britain’s Chief Constable Mark Roberts, head of the football unit, said the World Cup and the associated alcohol consumption had led to an overall increase in reported incidents.
He added that around 300 cases of domestic violence were reported on the night of England’s game against Norway, when pubs were allowed to stay open until two in the morning.
The figures showed that the 384 incidents of domestic/domestic violence accounted for 17 per cent of the total of 2,322 football-related incidents recorded during the tournament.
There have also been 391 arrests in the UK in connection with the tournament. The total incidents included 1,008 incidents at licensed venues, the second highest number in similar tournaments.
Roberts noted a direct link between the extension of alcohol license hours for late games and the increase in accidents, saying: “The more alcohol consumed, the bigger the problem.”
He emphasized that this also includes cases of family/domestic violence.
What happened in previous tournaments?
Comparisons with previous tournaments show the nature of the problem. In the 2018 World Cup (Russia), 306 cases of domestic violence were registered, and in Euro-2020 – 193 cases.
351 incidents were reported at the World Cup 2022 (Qatar) (119), Euro 2024 (Germany), while 384 incidents of police violence were reported at the 2026 World Cup.

2022 World Cup: 573.
Euro 2024: 1302.

Euro 2020: an incomparable number
England’s last five major tournaments saw the highest number of accidents during Euro 2020, with 2,345 accidents and 599 arrests.
Abroad, Roberts praised the behavior of England fans in the US, stating that “the behavior of the fans was fantastic” despite the large numbers and that incidents were few and far between. In the US, local police arrested just 22 England fans, while there were no incidents at Qatar 2022.
Crimes recorded in the US included: 8 public order and trespassing offences, 6 assaults causing bodily injury, 2 ticket forgeries, 1 drunkenness and 3 evictions.
Roberts raised concerns about the ability of the force to plan for potential crimes in the UK, particularly when licenses are being renewed at short notice.
He pointed to England’s game against Mexico, which kicked off at 1am UK time, where pubs had their licenses extended until 5am, a decision made just 48 hours before the game. This prevents timely realignment of shifts or deployment of additional officers, he said, urging consideration of security proposals to balance benefits with potential threats.
