With the help of data, museums are creating a visitor experience

Giovanni Kanter visits an art gallery only once when he visits a new city. This is on top of her frequent research in New York museums, where the 25-year-old ICU nurse lives and studies. He often finds new artists and photo galleries through word of mouth, though he’s only just started to build his social media feed to provide more content (he’s currently in what he calls the “surrealism phase”).

He was raised on art; he is the son of an artist Marianne Gargour and the nephew of a mixed-race artist Heather Hutchison and artist-printmaker Mark Thomas Kanter. His “education about exposure” featured childhood trips to theaters and fairs in Dallas, where he grew up, and in France, where he lived with his grandparents.

But Kanter is different. Many other young people have a more in-depth art education, perhaps shaped by occasional school trips or visits to museums as a family. If they haven’t developed the instincts for what Kanter calls “passing through art and taking it in,” the museum experience is essential to how they learn and understand art.
