India’s education ministry resigns after weeks of ‘Cockroach’ protests | Objections

Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned in a major threat to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government after international protests over the paper leak.

India’s education minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned, handing a major victory to youth protesters across the country who called on him to quit smoking to take responsibility for a series of exam rigging.

Pradhan announced his resignation on Saturday, when police fired tear gas to disperse protesters in New Delhi, hours before their leaders were scheduled to hold talks with government ministers.

Pradhan said he did not want to allow thousands of students who wanted to resign to take advantage of the “anti-nationalism”.

He also said he did not want to see students become “preoccupied with legal issues” instead of learning and building their careers.

‘Democracy has won!’

“We have done it,” said Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the satirical group that led the protests, shouting at the protest site at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Authorities banned internet access and closed 18 metro stations around.

Similar celebrations were reported from other cities across the country.

Writing on X, the CJP said: “The ring has won… Democracy has won!”

The CJP said it has three other demands: one crore rupees ($103,554) to the families of all the students who died by suicide, no punishment for those who participated in the protests, and a public apology from the Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force paramilitary for the attack on the protesters.

Writing on X, the team said that the three are “pending”.

“We’re not going to go like this,” founder Dipke said. “Remember, don’t mess with the cockroaches.”

Anger has grown since police on Monday injured scores of students, swore at them, fired tear gas and automatic rifles to stop a crowd of protesters marching on the parliament.

The second round of negotiations between the leaders of the group and the government is expected to take place on Saturday. It is unclear whether the meeting will continue. Discussions were held again on Friday.

The Modi government has earlier tried to ease the tension by announcing fast-track courts in exam-leaking cases and saying it would enact laws to strengthen measures against cheating and corruption in mail.

The protests, which have been a sign of dissent from the Modi government in recent years, reflect growing anger over unemployment, corruption and government accountability.
