Understanding Maresca’s game model is key to understanding how Rhodri, Anderson and someone like Bowadi stack up.
As a disciple of the positional game, he draws comparisons between football and chess.
“There are a lot of similarities,” Maresca said. “The most important thing is positional play and strategy.
“It is very important for a coach to have the mindset of a chess player: planning, studying countermoves, choosing the position of the pieces.”
Maresca’s strategy is mostly based on a 3-2-2-3 ball formation.
One of the most useful features of Rodri in Maresca is the ability to move between these predefined locations.
For example, during the World Cup we saw his former City teammate Aymeric Laporte push the ball up and down the back line.
Naturally, Rodri spent most of the game in midfield, but when space opened up he was more than capable of pushing forward.
