Birmingham Phoenix were bowled out by Trent Rockets for just 64 runs as they suffered a crushing nine-wicket loss in the women’s competition at The Hundred at Edgbaston.
Phoenix’s total – where more than half their runs came from Australia’s Ellyse Perry (39), four batters were dismissed for no runs and their second-highest scorer made six – was the joint second-lowest in the competition, behind their own 54 all out in 2024.
Uncapped Australian spinner Samantha Bates (3-10), compatriot Kim Garth (2-5) and former England all-rounder Georgia Elwes (3-13) did most of the damage for the Rockets.
Ellis Perry was one bright spot on a disappointing day for Phoenix
The Rockets then cruised to victory in just 31 deliveries, with England’s Sophia Dunkley hitting nine boundaries in an unbeaten 17-ball 43 and Sophie making an unbeaten nine-ball 19 after Australian opener Beth Mooney (4) was dismissed cheaply.
During Phoenix’s disappointing batting display, their top three of Davina Perrin (2), Tammy Beaumont (0) and Alice Capsey (1) combined for just three runs.
Their batsmen at Nos 5, 6 and 7 – Annerie Derksen, Jemima Spence and Kayla Reineke – then all failed to score, with Phoenix indebted to Perry, who was dropped for nine by fellow Australian Ash Gardner to avoid further embarrassment.

Bates: ‘Frantic’ warm-up and spin-heavy attack yield results

“It’s great to play my first game here with the Rockets and get a win on the board. We thought we’d go spin-heavy at Edgbaston and we’re glad it paid off.
“Kimmy (Kim Garth) bowled really well up front. It was nice that I got the award, but Kimmy really set the tone for us.
“We also had a pretty exciting warm-up and I think we should stick to it because we fielded brilliantly there.”
