Police have declared a ‘major event’ as weather changes increase the risk of the Cairngorms wildfires.

Police Scotland has declared a major incident as emergency services continue to deal with the 10-day bushfire in the Cairngorms National Park.

The force said it had increased the fire risk to the village of Netty Bridge following a “significant change in weather”.

All Netty Bridge residents have been evacuated so emergency services can continue to respond.

Supt Judy Hill said: “The weather conditions in the Cairngorms over the past 24 hours have added further complications to this situation.

“Information that the fire is spreading to Netty Bridge, it has been decided to declare a major incident and to evacuate residents as a precaution.

“As our fire service colleagues continue to tackle the blaze, additional police resources have been deployed to contact those who need to evacuate their properties and patrol around restricted areas.
