In a much-anticipated move, a committee appointed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has voted to approve restrictions on the production of peptides for human use. Thursday’s public meeting saw a very divided group recommend raising the limit on four peptides; ratings on three additional peptides are planned today. The move comes despite a lack of evidence regarding their safety and effectiveness.
The move was sent a few months earlier when peptide enthusiast and Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took steps to ensure this.
Like proteins, peptides are made up of amino acids linked in chains. Peptides vary in length; they are usually 10-20 amino acids long, unlike proteins, which can be hundreds or even thousands. Some of them, such as insulin, are mainly produced by the modification of proteins into small fragments, and the resulting peptide interacts with receptors that have changed to send cells depending on their levels.
