US records 2,318 cases of measles, more than 2025 total | Health Issues

Scientists warn that the lack of vaccination leaves vulnerable groups such as young children at risk of disease.

The United States has recorded 2,318 measles disease from the beginning of 2026, continuing to break records from 2025 with five months of the year remaining.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recorded this number in an update shared on Friday. The agency recorded 2,289 measles cases last year, the highest number in more than 30 years.

“What we can read and report is always limited to what happened, because it depends on people being willing to get tested, sharing information with health and public health officials,” Dr Varun Shetty, chief epidemiologist for the state of Texas, told The Associated Press.

“Sometimes this doesn’t happen.”

A sharp rise in activity points to a resume of diseases that had previously been eradicated through successful vaccination campaigns. The US ended local measles outbreaks in 2000.

But such vaccine efforts have been attacked by skeptics, including famous members of the administration of US President Donald Trump, who have tried to push back vaccinations even though they are closely related to science in their actions.

This year has been the nation’s worst year for measles outbreaks since 1991, with major outbreaks occurring in states such as South Carolina, Utah and Arizona. A 95 percent vaccination rate is needed to prevent such outbreaks.

Health officials in South Carolinafighting the biggest measles epidemic in 35 years, it is said that 997 people have attended, although he said that the number is probably low.

National vaccination coverage of preschool children against diseases, such as measles, mumps, and rubella, fell to 92.5 percent in 2024-2025, with even lower rates in some regions.

Young children and people with weakened immune systems are often at risk during outbreaks.

“It is very important, not only for individuals, but also for communities, to have more vaccinations,” Shetty said.
