Senegal have been given October by CAS to appeal to regain the AFCON title they won in a shock match against Morocco in January.

Senegal’s appeal to reclaim the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) they won in a raucous final against Morocco in January will be heard at the top court of the game on October 8.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said on Friday that the case will be held at its headquarters in Lausanne, without a date to issue a decision.

CAS judges can take several months to announce their decision.

Preparations for the appeal hearing were underway at the World Cup, where Morocco reached the quarterfinals and Senegal lost in the round of 32 against Belgium.

Senegal defeated Morocco 1-0 after extra time in a surprise AFCON tournament in Rabat. Senegal’s players came off the pitch and delayed play for 15 minutes while Morocco were awarded a stoppage time goal which was saved.

Morocco was given the chance a few weeks later when the Confederation of African Football’s appeals judges ruled that Senegal had failed to play the game by leaving the field.

The decision appears to ignore the rules of football, which state that the referee’s decision on the field of play is final.
