The founding of American science has officially begun

The science funding system must account for this disparity, said Claes de Vreese, a professor of AI and humanities at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. “You can’t use venture capital to force success when you’re already selling a patent.”

This model also stands in stark contrast to Bush’s promotion of non-profit research conducted without an eye for immediate profit, because such work will lead to breakthroughs. The scientific system built on this principle is what helped make the United States the world’s most powerful research force. Analysts say the report was infused with this Silicon Valley mentality, and a serious misunderstanding of science. “The report doesn’t look at how science works,” said Harvard professor Jeffrey Flier, a former dean of the university’s medical school, adding that it “seems to be complacent” about areas of study that need scientific research to improve. “This is completely insane as a way to change funding and scientific activities in the US,” he said, calling the report’s recommendations “a serious threat” and an attempt to politicize and control science.

Other researchers I spoke with felt the same way. The entire government approach seems to be built on the “false belief that future science will come from the technology sector,” Andreas Karch, a professor of physics at the University of Texas at Austin, said.
