As Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc prepares for his first practice session at the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lance Stroll’s rear suspension fails in his new Aston Martin.
Aston Martin has brought a new car in for a major overhaul for the first time in this race, and the rear suspension is one of the many design changes on it.
After completing turn three, the left rear suspension appeared to break.
Team-mate Fernando Alonso was dispatched as soon as the session started and set the 13th fastest time in an encouraging fashion.
That’s a long way from where Aston Martin wants to be, but it’s a big step forward from where it’s been this season and down towards the back of the field.
Alonso’s time was 2.475s off Leclerc’s – but the Aston Martin was four seconds off in recent races.
Leclerc was 0.484s ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton was third ahead of second Red Bull’s Issac Hadjar.
Leclerc’s session ended early when his car suffered a failure and stopped on pit road before reaching the Ferrari garage.
Mercedes’ George Russell was fifth fastest ahead of Audi’s Gabriel Bortoletto.
Mercedes reserve Frédéric Vesti was seventh, driving championship leader Kimi Antonelli.
Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg and Arvid Lindblad Racing and Liam Lawson Racing completed the top 10.
