While Argentina has been discredited throughout the 2026 World Cup, disputes over the finals are now being investigated by FIFA’s ombudsman.

As FIFA investigates Argentina’s actions after the World Cup final, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has said the actions are “illegal and unacceptable.”
FIFA asked one of its critics on Monday to explain the on-field controversy after Spain’s 1-0 extra-time win on Sunday to strip the champion.

Argentina forward Leandro Paredes tackled Spain midfielders Eric Garcia and Gavi, and Spain captain Rodri was hit in the stomach as he tackled Argentina defender Nahuel Molina.
“It can’t be allowed,” De la Fuente told Spanish journalist TVE on Thursday, adding that he didn’t see what happened at the time “celebrating with other people”.
“In any case, I think it is unacceptable and unacceptable for this type of player, who I have praised in the past and who has a good coach,” said the Spanish coach.
FIFA has not disclosed details of the investigation, or whether witness statements may be sought from Spanish players and staff.
Argentina’s assistant coach, Roberto Ayala, apologized on Wednesday for his fight with Dani Olmo, which he described as a kick and not a punch.
De la Fuente praised his players during a TVE interview for their performance at MetLife Stadium.
“I want to highlight our behavior in the face of this kind of aggression and provocation,” the coach said. “Our players are always calm and behave like true professionals.”
The Spanish team stood in honor of Argentina’s players who were on their way to receive their medals from US President Donald Trump. A few minutes later, when Rodri raised the trophy, most of the Argentine team refused the ceremonial moment.
FIFA’s governing rules allow the special prosecutor to “request the opening of disciplinary proceedings and consider the imposition of sanctions against members, clubs and individuals”.
FIFA has not provided a timetable for any charges, and it is unclear when any bans on Argentina players will end as the team has no competitive matches scheduled in the coming months.
