Four people were killed when their car crashed into a lamppost in Huyton, Merseyside.

Four people have died after a car crashed into a lamp post in Merseyside, police said.

The car left the road and crashed on Liverpool Road in Houghton just before 02:00 BST.

Merseyside Police said two men, aged 23 and two aged 24 and 26, died at the scene.

The force added that a 27-year-old man who was a passenger in the vehicle was taken to hospital and is in stable condition.

The black Seat Coupe was traveling from Liverpool to Knowsley before it veered off the road and hit a lamppost.

11 roads in the area, including Liverpool Road and East Prescott Road at the junction of Princess Drive and Finch Lane, have been closed while police investigate.

The force said the closures would remain in place through the weekend.

Supt Paul Holden, of Merseyside Police, said the force’s priority was getting answers to the families affected by the crash.

“We know this happened early this morning, but if anyone saw what happened or was driving in the area before the incident, please contact us,” he said.
