The most difficult test of his career awaits Jurgen
Jurgen Klopp was not only a successful coach in his previous stations, but his name was always associated with reviving the teams he led until he became a “savior” capable of miracles.
The German coach today faces the biggest challenge of his career as he is tasked with rebuilding a Germany team that is going through one of its most difficult periods in history, amid high hopes met with no less doubt and criticism.
A few weeks ago, Klopp, as a television analyst, watched Germany exit the World Cup after losing on penalties to Paraguay.
The defeat led to the resignation of coach Julian Nagelsmann, plunging German football into a new crisis, prompting the German Football Association to move quickly to select the man best suited to get the national team back on track.
Just three weeks later, the German Football Association announced the appointment of Klopp as coach of the national team, with a contract that extends until 2030 to lead the team in Europe’s Euro 2028 and World Cup 2030 championships.
His first match as the head of the coaching staff is scheduled for September 24 against the Netherlands.
Klopp said after his appointment. “The national team is able to unite Germans in a way that many other things cannot, and that is what makes this mission so special to me.”
An exceptional record that gives fans hope
The 59-year-old Klopp is considered one of the greatest German managers of the modern era, having won the Champions League and the English Premier League with Liverpool, as well as winning the German league title twice with Borussia Dortmund.
For this reason, many believe that he is the right man to return the German national team to its natural position, after it has lost its prestige in recent years.
German Football Association president Bernd Neuendorf confirmed that Klopp was the first choice since Nagelsmann’s resignation.
He said: “Jürgen embodies passion, confidence and the ability to inspire people. After the resignation of Julian Nagelsmann, we did not have a good choice for him, so we worked hard to complete his contract.”
Klopp will also rely on two of his most prominent former Liverpool assistants, Pep Linders and Peter Kravitz, to try to replicate the trio’s success in the English Premier League.
Widespread public trust
Despite the difficult circumstances that the national team is experiencing, Klopp enjoys a lot of public support. In a survey conducted by the German “Kicker” magazine, about 80% of the participants considered Klopp to be the ideal choice to lead the national team.
Many believe the German national team has lacked the strong personality and winning mentality in recent years that have been associated with Klopp’s name throughout his coaching career, especially after he became known for the term “mental monsters” he used to describe his players at Liverpool.
Stefan Effenberg, the former star of the German national team, said that Klopp is able to give the national team a “new spirit of optimism”.
Borussia Dortmund CEO Carsten Kramer also confirmed that Klopp’s influence can go beyond the technical aspect.
“I think he embodies many qualities that are missing in German football and even in German society at the moment,” he told Kicker magazine.
But.. not everyone supports Klopp
Despite the wave of optimism, Klopp’s appointment did not enjoy consensus within Germany. The coach has been widely criticized since joining Red Bull in 2024 as head of global football, a move many fans saw as a betrayal of the traditional principles of German football.
Red Bull is constantly criticized for its multi-club ownership model, in addition to being accused of circumventing the “50+1” rule, which gives fans of German clubs the right to control the decisions of their clubs.
Controversy grew last July after reports suggested Klopp would continue in his role as Red Bull ambassador even after taking over as national team coach. This has caused widespread anger.

The crisis is deeper than changing the coach
Germany are experiencing their worst run in decades, failing to get past the round of 16 in their last three World Cup games.
Many voices within Germany believe that the crisis extends to the entire football system, and not just the technical staff.
Klopp himself agrees with this opinion. In previous statements to Magenta TV, he said: “I have said many times that the problem is not only with the coach.”

The beginning…and the real test
Klopp will officially begin his mission next September when he leads the German national team against the Netherlands in the Europa League.
But the real test will come two years later when the team competes in the 2028 European Championship, hosted by the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The tournament could be a special one for Klopp as he could return to the city of Liverpool where he achieved his historic glory if Germany play one of their matches at Everton’s new Hale Dickinson Stadium, although Anfield will not be among the host stadiums.
