A “significant” car bomb has been caught driving across the border in the Republic of Ireland in connection with an attack in Northern Ireland, police said.
The vehicle was stopped on Wednesday in an operation targeting opposition republican activities. Two people were subsequently arrested.
Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly confirmed on Friday that officers had found an explosive device and described it as an “extremely significant seizure”.
The vehicle stopped on the N2 near Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, at around 3pm on Wednesday.
The driver of the vehicle was a woman in her 20s. He was arrested on Wednesday afternoon And a man in his 40s has been arrested since then.
Gardaí (Irish police) called for the assistance of the Irish Defense Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, who examined the vehicle.
