It was a dream come true for Qureshi to return to a second home Games after visiting Kelvingrove’s outdoor green 12 years ago.
A member of the Glasgow Indoor Bowling Club – just around the corner from his restaurant – he spent hours preparing for the conditions that awaited him in his opening match against Wales’ Ross Owen.
Unfortunately, it didn’t quite go to plan as he lost in straight sets – 12-5 and 17-0.
“It’s the worst game I’ve ever played,” a still-elated Qureshi told BBC Scotland. “It was very hard to do. The more I tried, the worse it got.”
However, Group C is far from lost with four games remaining.
On the carpet, Qureshi expects a lot of improvement. Beyond that, he’s not sure if he’s intimidated his supporters.
“I’ve had a few here,” he said. “But, with my performance, I don’t think they’ll come back again!”
Until they return to the restaurant. Because, for now they have lost the practice of banks.
The former world number one – who won the world indoor singles, pairs and mixed pairs titles last year – is known for dining on Glasgow’s south side, but he’s heading elsewhere for now.
“I’m a bit scared to go back this week in case he puts something in my food,” joked the 30-year-old from Inverie. “So I’ll be away for now.”
Banks faces Qureshi at 14:45 on Friday.
