Scotland’s Angus Gunn conceded four losses on his Earthquakes debut in San Jose

Visiting centre-half David Breckalo was left unmarked when he headed home Eduardo Atuesta’s free-kick on just seven minutes.

Winger Ivan Angulo doubled City’s lead in the 29th minute with a powerful low drive from outside the penalty box into the far corner.

France legend Antoine Griezmann made his debut following the 35-year-old forward’s move from Atletico Madrid.

Paraguayan midfielder Brian Ojeda rounded off the scoring in the 73rd minute, curling a header between Gunn and the near post from another Atuesta set piece.

At the other end, Gunn’s opposite number, Canada’s Maxime Crapeau, made several fine saves, a couple to deny Timo Werner a scoring debut for San Jose after the German striker’s move from RB Leipzig.

Despite the loss, Gunn’s side remain tied atop the Western Conference on points but second on goal difference behind the Vancouver Whitecaps, who lost 4-3 away to Cincinnati but have a game in hand.

San Jose is fourth in the overall table, ahead of Argentina forward Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in Nashville.

The Gunners next host the LA Galaxy, who are ninth in the Eastern Conference, on Sunday.
