AAfter ten years of pursuing a unique brand of luxury, the success of the A-list seemed like something that could be closed. Charli xcx. He 2024 club-rat opposite Brat it spawned memes, political scandals, Collins’ speech of the year and possibly the demise of the bra industry. Her very attractive nature seemed to carry her as the epitome of Parliament’s bad girl; the question of whether “brat summer” could end – whether Charli could inspire interest – was so loaded that it turned into a mockumentary, A minute. It made success look pathetic: your universe became frustrated by the directors who want to milk their precious cow for every last drop of acid.
Even for a pop star who’s known for reinventing things, it’s costing him dearly. Pivot is risking losing new fans and appearing deliberately controversial. When Charli released a short two-minute song Rock Songsmany felt like a middle finger. “I think the dancefloor is dead,” he strums guitars that sound like speakers jamming a Nokia 5110, “so now we’re making it.” rock music.” There was the boring idea of the dancefloor being so lively, actually (like if Charli got on a strong culture and then took it off), and if they were trying to bring out new fans for good weather. But the secret of this cheeky song is surprisingly sure: “Jump on the stage / I hope they catch you today / But if they’re not good,” he sings without thinking, confirming that he will take it, and come with Charli – or not, as you want – when he takes this one.
Music, Fashion, Movies prosaic mention Charli’s recently in acting and fashion collaboration. But from the early musicians, the big picture became a little dull compared to Brat’s exploration of the anxieties about female relationships. He quickly denied that he was reeeeeally making rock music. SS26’s most scandalous apology to celebrities; a Wink Wink hat to 00s French indie sleazers the Teenagers as Charli pinky-promised she was respectable now. But I wish these releases were spread out on purpose, to prevent Music, Fashion, Movies from leaving Charli’s hands before they came out.
That slippage becomes the start of another smart and insecure album about the instability of identity – not as a great songwriter who longs for evolution, but how we can know each other, or even ourselves. Rock music and SS26 explore the meaning of self: reclaiming the culture of resistance; a famous hypocrite who evades criticism by using some kind of sympathy (“my heritage may give me a USP”). On Card Declined’s vague, deranged chug, he’s buying a “personality / whole history” through high quality. There is no eye to the side: Charli, who always sees the culture, understands that selfishness is the way we live here, how it can provide an escape from difficult times, or quickly call for a fire. Even leaning on the guitars and stripping down to Charli’s usual AutoTune toy is a realistic idea, though it’s far from the cosplay genre. Along with co-producers AG Cook and Easyfun, Charli reinvents guitar music on an intimate, pocket-friendly level – albeit with a serious flair.
There are two songs about different best friends. Magic Metal Montana, the vagueness of the Strokes’ guitars and half-time emo, is a love song for longtime producer AG Cook. “We don’t talk,” he sings lovingly, “we make music, we talk like that.” The bolshie, muscular Persona laughs at his friend who constantly talks and calls Charli his friend but doesn’t say anything real, a joke that Charli understands: “We’re all under the influence of life imitating art, and we all know it,” he sings. Who do you trust to be your true, vulnerable self?
For Charli, who is not afraid to appear uncomfortable, it is her audience. The amazingly handsome couple shares how they expressed themselves through technology. The melancholy, jittering Camera confronts his worries about whether he is a fool for wanting to “lose my life” to do it, but how soft it is to be in heaven, the firefly-dappled rhapsody makes you understand how liberating it is. Pop stars are always called dilettantes. Charli reframes the idea: how at any moment, a bolt from the blue can change your mind, making you feel terrifyingly reborn.

Her original appearance on I’m Afraid, about how her insecurities can stem from her father’s absence. After all, the bassy dissonance that resembles John Cale Cooperation House, screams from the fear of failing to be his wife (she married 1975 drummer George Daniel last summer) is a drunken, symptomatic, desperate child, two other inappropriate information. “Take the ring, take the ring,” he shouts; then it sounds like he is tired because he agrees to say these “difficult” things, unspeakable “so that my insides are not dark”. This is less about artistic cleansing than it might seem: “All this pain makes me believe / I’m a good artist now / The excuse I tell myself / Selfish action,” he admits. Do they criticize themselves? Absolutely. Is that constant compulsion to put it all on us – self-love and self-hate; security and frustration – making Charli our relentlessly persistent pop star? God, yes.
