Argentina legend Angel Di Maria has settled the row surrounding Tango captain Lionel Messi’s potential retirement now after multiple reports confirmed Spain’s 2026 World Cup finals would be the former Barcelona wonderkid’s last.
Messi scored an unanswered goal in Argentina’s defeat by Spain in the World Cup final in America, failing to retain the title after winning it in Qatar in 2022.
Di Maria said in statements through the network.TNT Sports“: ““Yes, Leo should go on as long as he wants, I think he can go on for many more years.”
“At 39, he’s proven he’s still one of the best, and even one of the best in the history of football, and I don’t think there’s a ceiling to what he can offer.”
Regarding the future of Argentinian coach Scaloni, he said. “He is the leader of this Scaloneta and this team (of the current era) and I hope he continues. I believe he is creating a great generation of young players and that is in the interest of the national team.”
Di Maria concluded his statements by saying: “Of course, the decision is his. He knows what he wants, but as an Argentine, I hope he will continue his mission with the national team.”
