The African Confederation confirms the start date of the tournament
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has resolved the controversy surrounding the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations in the past few hours, following media reports of an increase in the number of teams participating in the tournament.
The continental confederation issued a clarification through its official accounts saying its president Patrice Motsepe confirmed at a press conference yesterday, Wednesday, that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be contested by 24 teams.

CAF stressed that what has been published by some media about the change in the number of participants is “inaccurate”, adding that the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be held in June and July, while the Cannes qualifiers will start in September and October 2026.
The clarification came after media reports that the next match scheduled for Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda will be played with 28 teams.
The Africa Cup of Nations witnessed the biggest expansion in its history since the 2019 edition in Egypt, after the number of participants increased from 16 to 24 teams, a system that continued in 2021, 2023 and 2025, and will also be confirmed in 2027.
