Manchester Supergiants beat London Spirit by seven runs in The Hundred at Lord’s as Liam Livingstone’s big-hitting innings went in vain.
The home captain’s 40-ball 69 from number four kept his side in contention as they chased down 139, before bowling figures of 2-14 in the Super Giants’ innings.
Livingstone put on 37 with Kieran Carlson (19) and 68 with Dewald Brevis after James Rew was dismissed for a wicket in two balls.
The South African international played Brevis’ junior partner, scoring 22 off 23 balls, before being caught and bowled by Gus Atkinson, who took 2-15 in the final set.
Needing 12 off the last five balls, Livingstone faced England pacer Sonny Baker, who gave away 25 off his first 15 deliveries.
Livingstone had already hit five sixes in his innings and looked to go big again.
It was the 23-year-old Baker who came out on top, though, bowling Livingstone for another four and then catching James Coles off the final delivery of the match as the Spirit finished on 131-6.
Batting first, Super Giants captain Aiden Markram got off to a slow start, scoring a run off 10 balls when he was trapped lbw by Adam Milne, but opening partner Tim Seifert did better.
Jos Buttler (16) and Heinrich Klaasen (17) put on a partnership of 49 and 40 as New Zealand scored 67 off 45 deliveries.
However, with no other batsmen reaching double figures, the Spirit lost seven wickets for 35 runs as they posted 138-9.
Seifert’s wicket was the seventh of the fall when he was caught at mid-wicket by David Willey off Coles, but he eventually helped set up the winning score for the visitors.
