Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk has ended her 26-day hunger strike demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the leak of several papers.

Wangchuk finalized his decision on Thursday night, shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a statement on social media, saying he would introduce a tougher law to check the paper leak.

In a video posted on social media, Modi called the leak a “tough news” for thousands of students.

Wangchuk, 59, said in a social media post that he ended the fast “after a long discussion on various issues and because of the possible violence in the country”.

He said he will explain the situation in another video.

The activist has been on hunger strike since June 28 in association with India’s youth-led Cockroach Janta Party which is demanding Pradhan’s resignation over the leak of college examination papers.
