Sony’s decision to abandon discs was inevitable, data shows



Many gamers have been complaining about Sony the recently announced decision to stop the sale of game discs in 2028. However, new data revealed by Circana analyst Mat Piscatella shows how years of economic activity have helped lead Sony to that decision.

In social media thread Thursday morningPiscatella shared information detailing Circana’s sales of exercise equipment in the US since 2003. A picture of what’s going on shows physical sales increasing in the 12 months ending June 2009, when 297 million units were sold in the US. Physical sales have been on a steady decline since then, resulting in 37 million units sold in the US over the past 12 months.

The latest revelations follow Original text from Piscaella showing that only seven PlayStation games have sold more than 100,000 units so far in 2026. Today, Piscaella tracked that number with a graph showing how common these bases were; 100 PlayStation games sold at least 100,000 physical units in 2008. The sales ceiling for PlayStation games isn’t very impressive these days; Piscatella shared that the best-selling PlayStation game has only sold 275,000 units in the US so far this year.
