On Thursday, Google became the third technology giant to be fined the largest Digital Markets Act (DMA), ordering it to pay more than $1 billion for two infringement cases that the European Commission (EC) found to have been neglected for too long.
In a Press releaseThe EC explained that the fine was due to “Google” choosing its own services on Google Search ($ 522 million) and anti-regulatory practices, such as charging fees or preventing developers from directing consumers to cheaper options for purchases outside of Google Play ($ 488 million).
Google has 60 days to change its services, or face daily fines. In order to comply with the DMA, the EC has asked Google to “treat third-party services found on Google’s results in a fair and impartial manner” compared to its services in categories such as shopping, hotels, and airlines. And Google must also allow app developers, “technically and systematically,” to voluntarily register users and promote ads outside of Google Play.
