A friend of the Manchester synagogue attacker was caught in a different plot

A friend of a Manchester synagogue attacker has been jailed for a minimum of 17 years to life after planning a separate attack on a military camp.

Mohammed Bashir, 31, made a 10-hour round trip to Jihad al-Shamin at the United Kingdom’s Defense Academy in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire in 2011. On August 14, 2025, he was forced to conduct a hostile investigation.

Weeks after the trip, 35-year-old Al-Shami attacked a synagogue in Heaton Park and two Jews were killed by police.

Bashir was found guilty of conspiracy to commit terrorism at Manchester Crown Court.

Bashir revealed his friendship with al-Shami after counter-terrorism police reviewed their phones following the October 2025 attack on the synagogue.
