Future of LIV Golf: Martin Keimer expresses doubt on circuit

Two-time major champion Martin Keimer said it is “highly unlikely” the LIV Golf Team Championship will be held this year, adding that players do not know whether the circuit will be around in 2027.

LIV Golf chief executive Scott O’Neill is trying to generate a $350m (£262m) investment to keep the tour going by January 2025.

The next LIV event kicks off at the JCB Club in Staffordshire before races in New York and Indianapolis on Thursday before a planned team championship in Michigan.

“I knew Indianapolis was going to happen a lot,” said Keimer, the Klux team captain.

“There was a discussion on Wednesday in Michigan, something very unlikely. Like Wednesday, it doesn’t look good.

“We were hoping to get a little more information (from the meeting). We got the information, but we were looking for more decisions or what’s happening next year.

“Unfortunately, even Scott doesn’t know, so he can’t tell us. It depends a lot on the investors.”

LIV was injured. This week it was announced that the PGA Tour and DP World Tour had signed a deal with the Asia Tour, which was LIV’s partner.

O’Neill has identified national openings around the world to participate in the new LIV schedule and stops on the Asian tour are considered central to that plan.

In the year Keymer, who hit the winning putt in the 2012 Ryder Cup, was candid when asked about his future at LIV in 2027.

“Hopefully, I think there’s a lot of interest and it looks good. But we were all there. If the signature isn’t there, it doesn’t mean anything,” added the German.

“If those investors decide to pull out, we won’t be playing at LIV Golf next year.

“And if they decide to do it, we have a chance.”

Meanwhile, LIV has agreed to pay $1 million (£748,000) to settle a trademark infringement lawsuit filed by Ohio-based Stinger Golf.
