The Football Association of England announced today, Wednesday, that formal charges have been laid against Southampton manager Tonda Eckert amid a spying scandal that sparked widespread controversy last season.

Last May, an independent disciplinary committee announced that the manager had admitted condoning such behavior, which led to Southampton being dumped out of the Premier League qualifying play-off final.

Following an investigation by the FA, Eckert has been charged for the alleged breach of the rules, while the FA explained through its official account on the X platform that the coach has no later than July 28 to respond to the allegations.

Southampton Statement

In turn, “Southampton” released a statement, confirming that it is aware of the accusation and saying: “Tonda and the club will continue to co-operate fully and transparently with the FA.”

“The club will also continue to offer its full support to Tonda and his staff as we work towards our goal of returning to the English Premier League.”

Southampton have been punished by missing out on the Premier League play-off final, described as the “most expensive in football” as it gives its owner a promotion ticket to the top flight, in addition to future financial income estimated at around 200 million pounds ($268.1 million), after the club admitted to monitoring training for 7 hours ahead.

In the wake of the crisis, German manager Eckert apologized on Southampton’s social media, stressing that watching opponents train was “standard practice” in other leagues where he had previously worked.
