“…we achieved what seemed impossible.”
A few days after Argentina’s defeat against Spain in the 2026 World Cup final, Lisandro Martinez thanked his fans and criticized Argentina’s critics.
The defender, who had to leave the field in the middle of the final match due to an injury, wrote on his Instagram account: “With a heart full of pain because we didn’t manage to bring the cup we all dreamed of, but with indescribable pride in this jersey and my teammates, technical staff, administrators, medical staff, cooks, all possible travel, cooks and equipment.”
He continued. “Most of all, I thank you because you have given us your love, support and strength, the passion that has always set us apart, and the unity of the people that I hope will remain strong over time.”
He continued. “I want to congratulate Spain for a well-deserved title.”
“And I say to our fans. the result does not summarize the journey we have taken. We faced many challenges and achieved what seemed impossible, and we never looked for excuses, but always found reasons that pushed us to continue.”
“We defended our colors off the field and lived unforgettable moments with the national team, next to our families and with your endless support. Your presence will remain a great honor for us.”
He concluded. “Always remember that the downfall of great men is a source of happiness for small minds. Thank you all. Save our country! I love you, Argentina.”
Argentina failed to become the first country to win the title twice in a row since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.
The three-time world champions (1978, 1986, 2022) did not have the necessary means to disrupt La Roja’s unbeaten machine, which was crowned for the second time in its history after 2010.
