Six beluga whales have arrived at aquariums in the United States after being taken from a closed Canadian marine park that could not keep the mammals.
They are part of a large pod of 30 belugas that live in Canada’s Marineland and need to be reintroduced.
Sierra, Acadia, Osiris, and Lillooet arrive at the Chicago facility, while Bertie Botts and Frankie arrive at Seaward in San Antonio, Texas.
Animals transported by truck and plane in special cold water containers were accompanied by marine mammal veterinarians during the journey. This is the first phase of an unprecedented global relocation effort.
The move follows months of planning and veterinary checks, with specialist teams now monitoring the whales as they move into their new homes.
