Wes Streeting said there was “no malice” behind the comments about the first inmate’s release plan, which was caught on camera.
In a video published by Guido Fawkes, the new Justice Secretary Alex Norris can be seen walking into the pair and being greeted by Home Secretary Mahmoud.
New Defense Secretary Streiting is heard calling Norris “the enemy now,” to which Mahmoud replies, “No, he’s not.” The street gang went on to say it “wants to release them all” – apparently in reference to the government’s plan to release prisoners early.
The comments were criticized by Kemi as underestimating the plan, which his party is strongly opposing.
“While Andy Burnham’s cabinet is joking about letting criminals out of prison early, Conservatives are listening to victims and will continue to fight this disgusting policy,” the Conservative leader wrote on X.
Streeting and Mahmood both apologized for their comments on Hot Mic, calling the early release plan a “serious problem”.
“I hope everyone can see that there is no ulterior motive behind the new Justice Secretary’s tail — it’s a reference to the old May/Clarke joke,” the defense secretary wrote in a post on X.
“However, I appreciate that these are matters of serious concern and I am sorry for any harm caused by this inadvertent moment of carelessness.”
The home secretary wrote: “I think everyone can see that there is no ill intention behind the new Lord Chancellor’s robbery – a role I once filled and thanks to the destruction of our justice system by the last Conservative government.”
“However, I appreciate that this is a serious matter and I do not want anyone to mistake this period of duty for a serious lack of purpose.”
