The US says more than 1,400 people have been infected with Cyclospora | Health Issues

US officials say the evidence points to the lettuce being grown in Mexico, which Mexico’s Ministry of Health denies.

An outbreak of severe stomach flu has affected more than 4,100 people in the United States.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Tuesday that 308 people have confirmed cyclosporiasis The disease has been reported in hospitals in 41 states, and no deaths have been reported so far.

Symptoms of cyclosporiasis usually appear one week after exposure to the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite by eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water, and include frequent diarrhea that lasts for weeks.

The CDC also warned that 7,400 people who are suspected of having the disease are being evaluated and all are expected to rise. Most of the time it has been related to the yield of lettuce.

On July 17, the US company Taylor Farms recalled iceberg lettuce grown in Mexico and shipped to US stores and restaurants after US investigators said the source of the outbreak was in Mexico.

However, Mexican Health Secretary David Kershenobich disputed the findings, saying on Tuesday that there is no evidence that the outbreak began in the central state of Guanajuato, where officials are investigating.

“So far, no evidence has been found that it came from there,” he said.

The US Food and Drug Administration has issued conflicting information on the cause of the outbreak.

On Saturday, the agency said a sample of Mexican lettuce from Taylor Farms tested positive for the virus, but announced Sunday that the results were false following a review of the data.

The agency came out on Monday to say that its investigation into the supply chain continues to point to the company’s Mexican facilities as the source of the virus.
