Ben Stokes defied severe cramps to once again grab the headlines with a typically gutsy century, returning to competitive action for the first time since retiring from Test cricket three weeks ago. He helped Durham beat Derbyshire in the One Day Cup.
The all-rounder was playing his first List A game for his county for nearly 12 years and displayed all his attributes as he battled repeated cramps – collapsing in pain as he reached fifty – with a brilliant knock of 108 not out to drag his side to a target of 257 runs.
Stokes had earlier gone wicketless in nine overs as Derbyshire’s Martin Anderson’s brilliant century provided the backbone of the Falcons’ 256-9.
Two early wickets from Ben Aitchison pegged Durham back but Stokes was well supported by Will Rhodes (45), Colin Ackerman and Ollie Robinson as he completed a stunning home comeback and sealed a five-wicket victory.
