Remco Evenpoel cut Tadez Pogacar’s lead at the top of the general classification to 28 seconds with a dominant time-trial win on stage 16 of the Tour de France.
Olympic champion Evenpoel completed the 26.1 km course along the shores of Lake Geneva in 32 minutes and 19 seconds.
It was the 26-year-old Belgian’s second stage win in a row after he won Sunday’s hilly 15th stage.
Slovenia’s Pogacar crossed the line in 32 minutes and 47 seconds as his overall lead was trimmed to 4 minutes and 32 seconds.
The rest of the field finished more than a minute behind, with Denmark’s Mathias Skjellmos in third.
Evenpoel admitted it was “pretty special” to secure his fourth Tour stage win overall on Belgium’s national day.
“It’s amazing, it was a very nice time-trial with a lot of people on the side of the road,” Evenpoel said.
“I read this morning that it’s been a long time since Belgium won on National Day, so I’m proud to be one.
“My whole family is here from both sides, my parents just arrived today. My wife is here with her parents and siblings.”
Evenpoel’s team-mate Florian Lipovits suffered a setback, however, after he crashed out of the stage with an injury.
Two days later, former two-time winner Dr Jonas Wingard dropped out of the tour Sitting second overall, Lipovitz went down hard in a turn.
The German was fifth in the standings up to that point and set the fourth fastest time in the three intermediate time-trials.
But minutes after he crashed, Lipowitz was taken to a medical vehicle by his left arm.
“It’s very unfortunate, it’s like a bitter-sweet pill to swallow with this win, so I wish him the best and I hope it’s not too bad,” added Evenpoel.
