Spanish club Barcelona is set to contact the agents of international defender Aymeric Laporte in the coming hours or days in a serious move to include him in the ranks of the Catalan team after his exceptional performance with Spain in the last World Cup which he won.
Catalan publication Sport has revealed that Barcelona management intend to open direct lines of communication with Laporte’s representatives to ascertain his future plans, noting that the club are keen on the 32-year-old defender as he is a left-handed player who combines experience and relative youth, in addition to an economically relevant price.
The newspaper notes that during the presence of “Barcelona” sports director Deco in the United States of America, preliminary negotiations have already taken place, where an agreement has been reached to resume discussions after the end of the World Championship, which will be reached in the coming hours.
Deco watched a number of Spain’s matches live from the stands and expressed his admiration for the level Laporte has shown, particularly his great harmony with partner Pau Cobarci to form one of the strongest centre-back pairings in the tournament, as their defensive solidity played a decisive role in La Roja’s title triumph.
The Catalan club believe Laporte has several outstanding seasons ahead of him to deliver, and particularly value his vast experience, leadership skills and exceptional ability to distribute balls from the back, which are ideal for Barcelona’s style of play.
What makes the deal more attractive from an economic perspective is that Laporte’s release clause with his club Athletic Bilbao is less than €15 million, a sum considered very reasonable considering the player’s level and international experience.
Everyone in the corridors of the Camp Nou still remembers the great success of signing veteran Basque defender Inigo Martinez, whose arrival initially raised some doubts, but he became a key player thanks to his good performances and quality complement in defense, experience that would favor a similar deal with Laporte.
However, the Barcelona board prefer to move forward with caution and deliberation, as they plan to hold extensive talks with the player’s agents in the coming days before Deco decides whether it is worth going ahead with a deal or whether it remains a preliminary enquiry.
Currently, Aymeric Laporte’s name remains on the list of potential candidates to strengthen Barcelona’s defensive line next season, pending developments in the upcoming negotiations.
