Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has confirmed his willingness to make history with his side ahead of their upcoming Champions League final clash with Arsenal.
Atletico Madrid host Arsenal in the second leg of their semi-final at the Emirates Stadium tomorrow, Tuesday, after last week’s first leg at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano ended in a 1-1 draw thanks to two penalties from Victor Gukeris and Julian Alvarez, with the winner going into the final for either Saint-Jean or Bayer Leverkusen.
Griezmann, 35, is one of the veterans who played in the 2016 final with Atletico, missing a penalty in normal time before scoring in his side’s penalty shoot-out defeat, knowing he will move to America’s Orlando City this summer after considering a La Liga exit midway through the season.
Today, Monday, at the press conference of the match, Griezmann, in response to the question whether he feels comfortable not moving to Orlando last March. “I was always clear that my goal was to stay here because we could do something incredible.”
The French star added: “I had no doubts, I felt we could do something historic by reaching another final and the team realizes that.”
Although Griezmann has won the World Cup with France and the Europa League with Atletico, he has never won the Champions League title as he admitted he was under “a lot of pressure” in the 2016 final, which his side lost to Real Madrid in Milan.
“That year was completely different. I was playing under enormous pressure. Everything was moving fast and I didn’t know how to slow down. But now I’m more mature and relaxed and play more relaxed and fun. You’d think these moments would happen again, but they don’t. Not everyone has the opportunity to play in the semi-finals of the Champions League.”
The French striker concluded. “Every time the Champions League season starts, you see yourself lifting the trophy. Every team, every player and every kid in their room dreams about it, and so do we. We only have two matches left.”
