£100,000 a day TikTok sales: direct marketing business

The TikTok store said its UK sales rose more than 30% year-on-year in June, with direct sales growing fast.

It claims that more than 6,000 live streams are now taking place every day.

An event at the centuries-old Covent Garden market hosted 20 small businesses who sold direct to customers across the UK.

With nothing more than a smartphone, a lighting kit and a fridge full of fresh meat, halal butcher Manny Malik from Wolverhampton had about two hundred people tuned into the session.

“Last week we went on Tik Tok for three hours and sold £8,000 worth of meat,” he says.

It normally takes three to four days to sell this amount at his family shop, Malik Butchers.

They are now opening a second store in Stoke. He said Tik Tok is helping to drive the expansion.

But there are fees.

Tik Tok Shop UK keeps up to 9p from every £1 sold on the platform, as part of its standard commission.

By comparison, eBay marketplace sellers pay between 6.9p and 14.9p depending on the category. In the unique live selling format, businesses selling eBay Live pay a combined fee of up to 8.42p including payment processing.

“It’s a lot,” Manny says.

“For us, there are no huge margins in the meat game. However, a new platform has opened up. We didn’t have these sales before Tik Tok. We are not losing money, we have got enough profitability in there,” he said.
