A federal judge today ordered Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery to abandon its $111 billion contract, giving the first victory to countries that sued to cancel the contract. The control issued a temporary restraining order to prevent companies from completing mergers and acquisitions.
The temporary injunction is valid for 14 days, but it can be changed to a preliminary injunction which would prevent the merger until the case is over. A temporary restraining order can be extended beyond 14 days if more time is needed to rule on the original order.
A group of 12 states led by California challenged the industry last week to cancel the deal, which was endorsed by the Trump administration. The states say the merger will eliminate competition by combining two of the five major TV studios with two of the five major TV stations.
