US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods in retaliation for what he calls “disproportionate treatment” of US cars, milk and alcohol.
The measures will take effect on August 19 and mark a major improvement in trade tensions between the North American neighbours.
The White House said the tariffs are necessary to protect American businesses.
The goods targeted range from everyday consumer goods such as wine glasses and hockey sticks to industrial products such as commercial cement. However, several key exports such as energy, potash, critical minerals and fish will be spared.
